Some countries are recognisable by their outline alone, almost like a face. Italy looks like a boot mid kick. Chile stretches more than 4,000 kilometres from north to south while staying only about 180 kilometres wide on average, a narrow strip running down South America's west coast.
Norway's coastline is one of the longest in the world because of its fjords, even though the country itself isn't especially large. Count every inlet and island and you end up with well over 100,000 kilometres of coast.
A border's shape often gives away a country's history. A dead straight line usually means it was drawn on a map somewhere far away, as happened across Africa during the colonial era. A border that twists and turns is more likely following a river or a mountain ridge.
Lesotho sits entirely inside South Africa, surrounded by a single other country. Only San Marino and Vatican City, both inside Italy, share that fate. Play the outline quiz for a while and often the shape alone is enough to name a country, no colours or symbols required.
