On many maps the island is simply called England. The state that governs there has another name and a longer reach: onto a second island and across a land border that is not the sea.
The United Kingdom is England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Only Northern Ireland has a land neighbour: Ireland. The other three nations are separated by water, not by a line on the ground.

Four nations, one land border
The island is not the state
Great Britain is the name of the main island. The United Kingdom is the name of the state. Swap the two and you drop Northern Ireland and turn Scotland and Wales into provinces. They are nations with their own parliaments in Edinburgh and Cardiff.
69.5 million people live on 242,900 square kilometres. London sits in the south-east of England, not in the middle of the kingdom. Once again the political centre and the geographic centre are two different places.

A land border people often forget
The border with Ireland is the state's only land border. Since the 1998 Good Friday Agreement it is barely visible day to day. It remains a state border. Wish it away and the kingdom becomes an island again, which it is not.
Then come islands often drawn in the same colour that are not: the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands are not part of the United Kingdom but Crown dependencies. The map in the head is more generous than the law.
A language that was never the island's only one
English is the state's working language. Welsh is official in Wales; Scottish Gaelic and Scots live in Scotland; Irish and Ulster Scots in Northern Ireland. The state has a dominant language. It has not struck the others from the constitutional furniture.
Scotland voted on independence in 2014 and stayed in the kingdom. That did not settle the question, only postponed it. Wales keeps its own language on signs and in schools. Northern Ireland remains the place where the state stops being an island. Four nations, one passport, no simple picture.
