Honduras keeps its capital in the highlands and its nickname on the Caribbean coast

Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, sits in the highlands, not on the sea. The name under which the country entered political language comes from the Caribbean coast in the north. There, fruit companies organised the export, while the government stayed up in the high country.

11,005,850 people live on 112,492 square kilometres. The neighbours are Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua. Spanish is the official language, the lempira the currency. To the north lies a long Caribbean coast, to the south the Gulf of Fonseca as the approach to the Pacific, shared with El Salvador and Nicaragua. Between them, the highlands and the capital. The country has two seas and a seat of government that touches neither.

Two cities, one highland, two seas

Tegucigalpa and Comayagüela face each other across the Choluteca river and together form the Distrito Central, the constitutional seat of the capital. It is an office in a highland valley, not a port. Anyone bound for the Caribbean descends. Anyone bound for the Pacific reaches it through the Gulf of Fonseca, a bay Honduras shares with two neighbours. The capital stays in the middle of the high country.

Spanish is the official language of this highland seat. On the Bay Islands off the north coast, English is daily speech from a history of British settlement. Garifuna and Miskito belong to the Caribbean side of the country. That does not change the official language. It shows that the north coast is not the same, linguistically, as Tegucigalpa. The state holds both in one law and in two landscapes.

The nickname was written in the north

The phrase banana republic entered circulation through O. Henry's story collection Cabbages and Kings, written after his stay in Honduras. It does not mean a fruit as such. It means a state whose export coast was organised by foreign fruit companies. United Fruit and Standard Fruit shaped that position in the north, in the Sula valley and at the Caribbean ports. San Pedro Sula is the city of that valley. Tegucigalpa remained the seat of government.

The lempira, the currency, carries the name of a Lenca leader who resisted the Spanish conquest. The money recalls a resistance inside the country. The nickname recalls a coast that others possessed. Both signs belong to the political geography. One sits on the coin, the other on the north coast. The capital sits on neither, and it governs them anyway.

Copán in the west, the Mosquitia in the east

In the west, near the border with Guatemala, stands Copán, a Maya city known for its carved stone inscriptions. It lies in the territory of Honduras and in a cultural space that does not treat the border as an end. The World Heritage listing marks an old centre at the edge of today's capital region. Tegucigalpa is not the heir of Copán. It administers the country in which Copán stands.

In the east lies the Mosquitia, forest and coast of the Miskito, thinly tied to the capital. The Río Plátano runs through that country. Between Copán and the Mosquitia lie the highlands where Tegucigalpa sits, and the Sula valley where the north earns its living. Honduras is that span. The banana coast explains the nickname. It does not explain Copán, or the forest in the east. The capital has to hold all of them.

Honduras is a highland state with two seas and a nickname from the north coast. Tegucigalpa governs. The banana shaped the political language. Copán and the Mosquitia show how far the country reaches beyond that nickname.
