Eswatini is a kingdom tucked inside the map of its neighbours

On the map Eswatini is a pocket. South Africa wraps the kingdom along the long side, Mozambique closes the short one. Mbabane is the administrative capital. The state itself does not sit only there. It sits with the king.

TerraTally's figures list 17,364 square kilometres and a population of 1,256,174. The country has no further neighbours. The official languages are siSwati and English, the currency is the lilangeni, and the South African rand circulates beside it. Until the renaming of 2018 the state was called Swaziland. The new name is its own. The place inside the neighbours' map has stayed.

A pocket between larger states

The highveld in the west carries Mbabane. The middleveld around Manzini is the denser economic district. The lowveld in the east is hotter, flatter, sugar cane and game reserve. These storeys all sit inside a small outline. None of them has a sea of its own. The next large harbour and the next large market lie in South Africa or, to the east, beyond the border with Mozambique.

A position like that makes the neighbour into daily life. Work, goods and broadcasts come from the other side of the border, often without the border looking like a border between states. The lilangeni is tied to the rand, and the rand is legal tender inside the country. Currency and map say the same thing. Eswatini is sovereign and, in economic life, set into the larger South African space.

Mbabane administers, Lobamba reigns

Mbabane is the capital of the offices. Lobamba, in the Ezulwini valley, is the seat of the royal house and of parliament. Two places for a small state are not vanity here. They separate administration and rule only by the building. The 2005 constitution leaves the king as head of state with a weight that goes beyond a representative office. Law, land and public ceremony meet in this monarchy.

Manzini is neither a coronation hall nor a hill of ministries. Trade is there, and the roads cross there. Name only Mbabane and you have described the postal address. Name only the king and you have described the constitution and forgotten the market. Eswatini is the unusual combination of both: a state whose map is filled in by neighbours and whose political centre is a court, not a row of ministries.

A name that lifts the country's own language into the title of the state

Eswatini is the name the country uses for itself in siSwati. Swaziland was the English colonial form. The renaming of 2018 did not move the map and did not abolish the monarchy. It attached the title of the state to the language of the majority. SiSwati and English both remain official. The new name says which of the two languages is to carry the proper name.

For the neighbours the name changes little about the tightness. South Africa remains the large economic space, Mozambique the other way out. For the kingdom the name belongs to the same thesis as Lobamba. A small state inside someone else's embrace insists on naming itself and on being governed from a court. The area remains 17,364 square kilometres. The political form is older than the new title and tighter than the border.

Eswatini is easy to confuse with the former Swaziland and wrong as soon as the court is forgotten. Mbabane stands on the highveld. Government is in the valley at Lobamba, in a kingdom that has almost only neighbouring country around it.
