Brasília does not stand on the coast, and that is the point. The old capital, Rio de Janeiro, lay on the Atlantic. The federal state built itself a new centre in the interior, so that governing would not remain the same thing as sitting in a port.
Brazil fills the east of South America. 212,812,405 people live on 8,515,767 square kilometres. The capital lies in the Federal District, on the highland of the interior, not in São Paulo and not in Rio. The country is a federation of states plus that district. The official language is Portuguese, the currency the real. Size alone does not explain the capital. Location does.

Planned capital in the interior
A city that was not there before
On 21 April 1960 Brasília was inaugurated and replaced Rio de Janeiro as capital. The building of it was a project of President Juscelino Kubitschek. Lúcio Costa drew the plan, Oscar Niemeyer the public buildings. That is architecture, and above all it is a decision about the place of power. Rio remained the great city on the sea. Brasília became the place where the federation was meant to be visible, far from the old coastal elites and close to the geometric idea of a centre.
The constitution of 1988 confirms what the move already was: Brasília is the federal capital. It does not lie in a state like other cities. It lies in the Federal District. That is the legal form of a political intention. The district belongs to the federation. The coast belongs to the large states and their metropolises. Treat Brazil as complete from Copacabana and you see the sea, not the seat of legislative power. See only Brasília and you see the plan, not the country that hangs on its ports.
Portuguese among a multilingual neighbourhood
The official language is Portuguese. That sets Brazil apart from the neighbours in which Spanish is the overarching language of the state: Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. It does not set the country apart from every neighbour. Guyana is English-speaking, Suriname Dutch-speaking, and French Guiana speaks French because it belongs to France. Portuguese is therefore not an island in a monolingual continent. It is the official language of the state that borders these neighbours at once, and still not the rule of the Spanish-speaking republics.
The real is the currency of this whole territory, from the Amazonian northern border to the temperate southern border with Uruguay and Argentina. The central bank issues it. One language and one currency hold together a federation whose landscapes have little in common: rainforest in the north, dry country in the north-east, the interior highland around Brasília, the metropolises of the south-east, the pampa in the south. The capital sits in one of those landscapes and claims to speak for all of them.
The capital was placed inland so the state would have a centre that is not a port.

Neighbours almost all around the border
The land border touches Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela. Added to that is French Guiana, which is France, without France being a South American state. Chile and Ecuador share no land border with Brazil. That list is the foreign-policy geography of the country: almost the whole continent is a neighbour, and a piece of a European republic sits inside that neighbourhood, because an overseas department meets the north.
Inside the country, the same width is the problem Brasília was meant to answer. The north is Amazonian, the south is another climate, the north-east another history of settlement. A state of this extent can hang its capital on the oldest port, or set it where the map had a gap. Brazil filled the gap. Whether the coast has stopped being the economic weight is a different question from where parliament sits. Parliament sits in the interior. That was the whole plan.
On the school map Brazil is a green block with a star in the interior. The star is Brasília, and it is deliberately not a port. Portuguese, the real and the Federal District hold the block together. The coast remains the old country. The capital is the correction of the coast.
