Africa is made up of 54 recognised countries, 55 if you count Western Sahara. No other continent packs in quite so many different nations.
The Nile runs through Africa for roughly 6,650 kilometres and eleven countries, long enough that geographers still argue whether it or the Amazon is technically the longest river on Earth. It depends entirely on where you decide the source begins.
The Sahara is the largest hot desert on the planet, roughly the size of the entire United States. Nigeria is Africa's most populous country, home to more than 500 languages.
Many African borders run in perfectly straight lines, drawn by European colonial powers on a map far away, with little regard for rivers, mountains or the people actually living there. Those lines sometimes have surprisingly little to do with the geography or the people who actually live there, something the Africa quiz makes easy to see.
